While the internet has a lot to offer, the best way to ID mushrooms is still by investing in a few good books. Mushrooms Demystified by David Arora is still the best one, although it's got a bias towards western US species. Roger Phillips Mushrooms of North America is better for the eastern US, but you have to use your thumbs to key stuff out. In other words, you have to match your collected mushrooms to the pictures.
Peterson's Guides and Audubon Guides? I don't find to be too helpful. You'll actually learn more from Mushrooms Demystified if you are serious. It will help you to "think like a mushroom".
And definitely, DEFINITELY do NOT eat any mushroom you collect until you are ENTIRELY sure you know what you have.

I think I would like to start mushroom hunting. Any suggestions how to get started?
